Movers Connect

Moving is the right moment to check your cover.

Health insurance is national, but the value of it is local — which hospitals have an agreement with your fund, and which extras providers are within reach of your new address. We compare funds on our panel and handle the switch.

- What changes when you switch

Waiting periods
Time already served on an equivalent level of cover carries across. You only serve new waiting periods on benefits you didn’t previously hold.
LHC loading
Lifetime Health Cover loading follows you between funds — it isn’t reset or increased by switching.
Agreement hospitals
Which private hospitals your fund has an agreement with varies by area. Worth checking against the hospitals near your new home.
Extras providers
Preferred-provider networks are geographic. A dental gap that was zero near your old place may not be near the new one.

- How we advise

General advice, clearly labelled as such.

What we do

Compare hospital and extras policies from the funds on our panel against the cover you hold today, explain the tiers — Basic, Bronze, Silver and Gold — and what each must include, and arrange the transfer with your served waiting periods intact.

We provide general information only. We don’t consider your personal financial situation, and we tell you where a decision depends on tax or medical circumstances we can’t assess.

Worth knowing

Hospital cover can affect the Medicare Levy Surcharge if your income is above the relevant threshold, and Lifetime Health Cover loading adds two per cent for each year you’re uninsured after the base age. Both are set by government and change from time to time — check current figures with the ATO or privatehealth.gov.au before deciding.

privatehealth.gov.au is the government’s free, independent comparison site and covers the whole market, not just our panel.

- Health Insurance questions

The ones we get every day.

What is the Medicare Levy Surcharge?
The MLS is an additional tax of 1-1.5% for high-income earners who don’t have private hospital cover. Having hospital cover can save you money if you earn above the threshold.
Waiting periods are the time you must wait before you can claim benefits. Most funds have 2 months for extras, 12 months for pre-existing conditions, and 12 months for pregnancy.
For accidents, you can usually claim immediately. For general treatments, you’ll need to wait until your waiting periods have been served.
LHC means if you don’t take out hospital cover by July 1 after your 31st birthday, you’ll pay 2% extra on your premiums for every year you delay, up to a maximum of 70%.
